This tutorial is designed as an entry-level course on the basic properties of LEDs. It will begin by answering the basic question of “What is an LED?” then proceed to a discussion of the basic properties of LEDs as light sources. The presentation will cover the basic properties and definitions such as flux, forward voltage, wavelength distribution, thermal properties, and optical properties. It will also provide instruction on how to read a basic LED datasheet. Finally, the tutorial will explore the various types of lighting applications in which LEDs have been successfully used.

Dr. Nadarajah Narendran is the Director of Research for the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, the leading university based research
center devoted to lighting. He is known throughout the lighting industry for his pioneering
research, publications, and educational activities in the field of solid-state lighting. His
leadership has helped to bridge the science of solid-state LED technology with mainstream
lighting applications. Dr. Narendran has authored or co-authored more than 60 articles in archival journals and proceedings. He is a Fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and a member of the International Society for Optical Engineering.

Yiting Zhu is a research scientist at the Lighting Research Center. She received her Master of Science in Lighting degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her research interests include lighting technologies and applications, phosphor syntheses and characterizations, phosphor-converted LED packaging, and optical design of LED-based luminaires. She received the Best Paper Award at the First International Conference on White LEDs and Solid State Lighting in Tokyo, Japan, in 2007. She was a Fellow (2007-2009) of the Link Foundation Energy Program.
