The design of LED luminaires involves many tradeoffs among cost, efficiency, lumen output, and other parameters. It is difficult, if not impossible, to optimize all luminaire parameters simultaneously. However, one parameter that takes precedence over many others is reliability, or lifetime. Customers who experience early failures, in spite of other positive features provided by the product, will be both disappointed as well as unlikely to conduct repeat business with the luminaire supplier. Moreover, claims of luminaire lifetimes of 50,000-100,000 hours have led to unrealistic expectations on the part of many potential users of solid-state lighting products.

This workshop will provide LED luminaire designers with a variety of tools that will enable the design of robust and reliable products. Foremost among these is thermal management, including the appropriate choices of substrate and heatsink materials and designs. However, other elements of reliability will also be considered, including attachment of LEDs to substrates, choice of optical components, and many others.Workshop attendees will come away with a set of useful tools to apply to luminaire design, as well as a better understanding of the basis of reliability problems and how to solve them.

Justin Kolbe joined The Bergquist Company 13 years ago and is now a Senior Research and Development Engineer with the Thermal Management Division. Justin contributes greatly to Bergquist‘s distinguished Research and Development team with his high level of experience and expertise in the field of thermal management. As a Senior R&D Engineer, Justin specializes in the research and development of innovative new materials and processes for the thermal management of power applications. Justin frequently presents at conferences and exhibitions educating attendees on the effectiveness and benefits of insulated metal substrates in the dissipation of heat from LEDs.

Sanjay Misra is the Director of R&D at the Bergquist Company. He started as a Senior Scientist at Bergquist in 1997, and has worked on a variety of thermal management materials. He is the author of 20 published articles, over 20 presentations, and nine US patents. He obtained a BS in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, a Master’s and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toledo, and did postdoctoral work at the University of Michigan, University of Akron and University of Minnesota.
