The solid-state lighting industry needs standards to assist its growth and avoid hype and confusion. Over the past several years a number of organizations have worked to develop standards and methods of measurement for critical factors such as LED system lifetime and performance. This workshop will address the most recent issues surrounding the adoption of industry standards for solid-state lighting, including technology advances, testing procedures, standards currently in place and future standards, ENERGY STAR and more. Among the key areas to be addressed during the workshop are:
• Overview of worldwide SSL standards activity
• Update on IESNA/ANSI standards development
• ENERGY STAR criteria and qualification process update for SSL products
• Review of the newly developed LED package recognition program at
Underwriters Laboratories
• Information for the current development of JEDEC LED thermal measurement standard
• Explanation of the background, rational, and benefits of DOE-sponsored SSL
outdoor lighting programs such as CEBA and MSSLC
Workshop attendees will become familiar with the details of the latest solid-state lighting standards that have emerged from several years of effort undertaken by committees working under the auspices of IESNA, ANSI, EPA, DOE, UL, JEDEC and international standards bodies.
Jianzhong Jiao is an internationally recognized expert for lighting products design, technology development, testing, standards and regulations. Dr. Jiao is the Chairman of SAE Lighting Committee, past Chairman of the NGLIA, past Chairman of the NEMA SSL Section Technical Committee, and an active member of committees and working groups in SAE, IES, ANSI, UL, SPIE, IEEE, JEDEC, SEMI, and others. Dr. Jiao is the SAE Follow, and has received several industry awards. He currently serves as the Director of Regulations and Emerging Technologies at OSRAM
Andras Poppe was a co-founder of MicReD in 1997, which is now the Mentor Graphics Mechanical Analysis Division MicReD Office. At Mentor Graphics he supports marketing of MicReD’s products. He is involved in various international research projects (e.g. EU FW7 NANOPACK, Fast2Light, THERMINATOR) and national R&D projects such as KözLED. He is actively involved in the JEDEC JC15 and CIE TC2-63 and TC2-64 standardization committees. Prior to founding MicReD, Dr. Poppe was an associate professor at the Budapest University of Technology.
Michael Shulman is one of UL’s Principal Engineers for lighting products and has over 30 years of product safety experience at UL. He has direct oversight of UL standards and technical decisions for portable, low voltage, emergency, and underwater lighting products, and has shared oversight for UL 8750 and the related certification programs.
Alex Baker is the Lighting Program Manager for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program, overseeing specification development, product qualification and technical support services for all lighting product categories including solid state lighting lamps and luminaires. Alex is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and is Lighting Certified by the U.S. National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions.
Edward Smalley is a Lighting Certified Professional (LC), with more than 25 years of experience in the design, construction and operation of public outdoor lighting systems. He is currently the Director of the U.S. DOE Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium, with a membership exceeding 270 municipalities and utilities. The Consortium’s primary function is to collect, analyze, and share technical information and experiences related to LED street and area lighting applications. Edward is also the Manager of Seattle City Light’s Streetlight Engineering Unit. His current assignment includes leading the planning, research & development efforts, as the utility converts to the next generation of LED street lighting technologies. He is also Executive Vice-Chair of the IES Street and Area Lighting Committee.
