LED fixture design requires the inter-disciplinary effort of four specialized engineering skills: optical design, electrical design, thermal management, and mechanical design. Optimized performance in any single area results in compromised overall performance of the finished product.  This course addresses the fundamental design considerations in each of these areas to establish a framework for successful LED fixture design and uses case studies to underscore the design tradeoffs by examining several LED based products.

Learning Objectives:

• Develop a broad understanding of the interdisciplinary trade-offs needed when designing
   with LED light sources
• Introduce SSL “lighting class” emitter operation and application.
• Understand the capability and limitations of LED color and brightness binning
• Develop the ability to read between the lines of LED manufacturers’ specifications
• Learn the effect of proper thermal management in determining brightness and lumen maintenance
• Learn the “Top 10 - Must Answer - Killer Questions” to ask your LED fixture manufacturer
  or supply chain partner

This will be a full day, six-hour workshop with morning, lunch, and afternoon breaks.  Experts from each discipline will present approximately one-hour lectures with slides, samples, and Q&A

Mark McClear is responsible for LED lighting applications development and Cree’s global Application Engineering Technology Centers.  Mark is a “chip guy”, having spent his entire career in the semiconductor industry.  He aspires to become a “lighting guy”, and has been a prolific writer, speaker, thought leader, teacher, and evangelist for solid state lighting for the past seven years.  Mark has nine issued and published U.S. patents in electronics and solid-state lighting.

Bob Householder has 19 years of experience in the field of optics and holds degrees in optics from Rochester Institute of Technology and Tufts University. He has concentrated his career in laser and medical optics and LED illumination. Mr. Householder is the Director, LED Solutions Engineeering for Universal Lighting Technologies (ULT). ULT, a Panasonic Group Company, is a leading provider of ballasts, lighting controls and LED based lighting products.

Hank Zabawski has over 20 years of experience in the LED field as a technology innovator, entrepreneur, and consultant.  He is presently Director of LED Technology for Heatron, Inc.  Hank holds seven patents and has two pending in the areas of LED technology and thermal management, and brings with him a wide range of experience, challenges and successes in LED integration.

Bernie Weir has 20+ years experience in the electronics industry and has held positions in application engineering, strategic marketing and product management. He is currently LED Applications Manager within the ON Semiconductor’s AC/DC Group where he is involved in LED driver development. He has published numerous articles and holds three patents.

David Venhaus, President and founder, Illumination Optics Inc., has over 10 years of experience developing LED-based illumination systems for on- and off-road vehicles, specialty luminaires, portable applications and architectural luminaires. He founded Illumination Optics Inc. in 2006. Prior to starting Illumination Optics he was Director of Lighting Technology at Everbrite LLC and an Optical and Applications Engineer at JW Speaker Corp.
