WORKSHOP #5:
TEST AND MEASUREMENT OF SOLID-STATE LIGHTING SOURCES

Tuesday, February 7                                         1:00pm-5:00pm

SPEAKERS:

Richard Distl
President
Instrument Systems

Thomas Attenberger
VP of Sales
Instrument Systems

As conventional light-sources are being replaced by LED-based lamps and luminaires in general-illumination applications, particular attention is now being paid to light quality issues such as uniformity and binning. However, measurements of solid-state lighting (SSL) sources confront engineers and designers with many challenges as compared to traditional luminaires. Special equipment and metrology know-how is needed to obtain accurate and reliable measurement results.

This workshop will discuss the fundamentals of light measurement, the optical properties of LEDs, and how these properties can be measured in line with existing and developing standards (CIE127, DIN5032). Other aspects of color quality, such as color temperature and color-rendering index will be included as well. The workshop will explain the different types of equipment needed for accurate optical measurements in the lab and on the production floor. Furthermore, we will discuss the LM-79 standard and take a look at the instruments required for testing SSL-based lamps and luminaires. Participants can further expect to learn how to evaluate the optical performance of LED modules and light engines needed for successful development of SSL fixtures and luminaires.

Richard Distl is President of Instrument Systems. He has pioneered LED and display metrology since founding the company in 1986 when he received funding from the German Government for the invention of a novel procedure to determine the spectrum of light radiation. Distl is member on several technical committees and holds worldwide patents.

Thomas Attenberger joined Instrument Systems in 2001 as product and sales manager. Today he is head of the sales department of Instrument Systems. Thomas Attenberger received his PhD in Physics in 1992 at the University of Regensburg, Germany, where he specialized in the field of high resolution spectroscopy.
