Ella Shum heads the market research in all application segments of the LED industry at Strategies Unlimited. She is also conference chair for the Strategies in Light events. Prior to joining Strategies Unlimited, Shum was General Partner at YEBY Associates, a consulting firm specialized in the LED industry. At YEBY, she was part of the initial phosphor sales team for Intematix and an early advisor to China’s SSL program. Shum was Managing Director of the R&D Lab at Emcore where she managed the development of TurboDisc reactors and epi research including LED technology. She was a marketing and sales executive for many years and she served as Vice President and Chief of Staff at BroadVision Inc. Shum received her MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and her B.Sc. in Computing Science from Imperial College, London.

Ron began his career at Bell Labs, leading the team that developed the first widely deployed InP laser for optical communications. He was co-founder of Lytel, a manufacturer of lasers, LEDs and datacom modules acquired by Tyco and also a VP at Motorola. Ron has a PhD from the University of Illinois where he studied under Nick Holonyak, Jr., the inventor of both the visible and the semiconductor laser.

While Japan has made progress in adopting LED replacement lamps, the rest world is in the initial stages of adopting LED lighting. As the world moves to ban incandescent lamps, LEDs have seen increased acceptance in lighting applications. The presentation will be a review of LED lighting market in 2011, highlighting the factors that will drive growth. A brief overview of the demographic, economic and technology trends together with the regulatory landscape will be presented. Considering the global factors that affect the demand and supply conditions, a preliminary forecast for LED lighting markets for major applications will highlight the opportunities and threats for the LED industry as the lighting markets transform.

This hands-on experience prepared him for advancements into senior leadership where he has held CEO positions with computer equipment maker Comtrol Corporation; computer and network security device maker Digitiliti, then joining Heilux as CEO at the start of 2012.
