Professor, Architectural Engineering
Oregon State University
In addition to his work at Oregon State, Professor Houser is editor-in-chief of LEUKOS, the journal of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), and co-founder of Lyralux, Inc. He has authored or coauthored more than 125 publications about light and lighting. He’s won the CIBSE Leon Gaster Award, IES Taylor Technical Talent Award three times, IES Presidential Award, and is a Fellow of IES. He was formerly on the Editorial Advisory Board for Architectural Lighting Magazine and he is one of four editors of the 10th edition IES Lighting Handbook. His recent research focuses on human perceptual and biological responses to optical radiation and the application of that knowledge to the spectral design of light sources. Related interests include illuminating engineering, photonics, daylighting, visual perception, human health, and sustainability—all in support of high-performance buildings. Interests also include the effective communication, dissemination, and critical consumption of scientific research. His former students work in government laboratories, universities, and in consulting engineering and lighting design offices throughout the United States. His university teaching includes courses on lighting design, research methods, color science, and light sources.
